The mother of St. Lucy suffered four years from an issue of blood, while the help of man failed, St. Lucy reminded her mother that a woman in the Gospel had been healed of the same disorder. “St. Agatha,” she said “stands ever in the sight of Him for Whom she died. Only touch her sepulchre with faith, and you will be healed.” They spent the night praying by the tomb, when overcome by weariness, both fell asleep. St. Agatha appeared in a vision to St. Lucy and calling her sister, foretold her mother’s recovery and her own martyrdom. That instant the cure was affected and in her gratitude the mother allowed her daughter to distribute her wealth among the poor, and consecrate her virginity to Christ. A young man to whom she had been promised in marriage accused her as a Christian to the heathens but Our Lord, by a special miracle, saved from outrage this virgin whom He had chosen for His own. The fire kindled around her did her no harm. Then the sword was plunged into her heart, and the promise made at the tomb of St. Agatha was fulfilled. (from Lives of the Saints by Fr. St. Lucy, one of the few woman saints mentioned in the Canon of the Mass, suffered martyrdom about the year 303, during the persecution of Diocletian. Though her story does not mention blinding as part of her torments, she is commonly pictured in art bearing a dish containing two eyeballs, and she has long been invoked against eye aliments. (from: The Prayer Book by The Catholic Press, Inc. Chicago Ill.) The 1st set of beads is in honor of the Holy Trinity and can be completed in gold. The 2nd set of beads is in honor of her Martyrdom and would be appropriate in red. The 3rd set of beads is to honor her virginity which are pictured in crystal clear or white. |
1) On the first bead pray: The Apostles' Creed 2) On each of the sets of three beads pray: a) Our Father b) Hail Mary c) Glory Be The first set is to honour the Holy Trinity, on the second set to honour her martyrdom, and on the final set to honour her virginity. 3) To complete, on the medal pray: Dear St. Lucy, whose name doth signify the light, we come to thee filled with confidence: do thou obtain for us a holy light that shall make us careful not to walk in the ways of sin, nor to remain enshrouded in the darkness of error. We ask also, through thy intercession, for the preservation of the light of our bodily eyes and for abundant grace to use the same according to the good pleasure of God, without any hurt to our souls. Grant, O Lucy, that, after venerating thee and giving thee thanks for thy powerful protection here on earth, we may come at length to share thy joy in paradise in the everlasting light of the Lamb of God, thy beloved Bridegroom, Jesus. Amen. |
